After sitting around for over 6 hours yesterday with few updates from the rangers on free agent day the announcement that Scott Gomez had signed with the Rangers broke, and I was going from website to website posting on various message boards and forums about it. However what I didn’t know was that two minutes later the Rangers announced that signed Chris Drury as well! Two of the greatest centers in the game, both playoff tested and now both on the Rangers. I had expected Drury to sign with the Rangers him growing up a Rangers fan, and his #23 being based off Don Mattingly( of the Yankees). However after coming up through the Devils system I didn’t think Gomez would also sign. On paper this coming season could be amazing for Rangers fans not only because of the free agent signings but also because the Buffalo, New Jersey, and Islanders got decimated. In almost 12 hours free agency will start in the NHL. The new york rangers are in the middle of everything with a few potential targets. Here are my choices in order of who I’d sign first.
1. Chris Drury
2. Michael Nylander( dependent on the price)
3. Scott Gomez
And of course resign Shanny, Avery, give Henrik that longterm contract, and hopefully a new contract for Prucha as well. But who knows what will happen. Hell honestly I just want to see Drury in a Ranger uniform next year.
” The Captain” Mark Messier where do you even start 6 Time Stanley Cup champion, twice as the Captain. 1,887 career points. 15 time all star. And many more achievements. He is second only to Wayne Gretzky( in my opinion) all time in hockey. He could fight, score, over power you, intimidate you. He could do it all. The captain to bring the Stanley Cup to New York City after 54 grueling years.
Well on June 28th, 2007 that all came full circle as Mark Messier was elected into the hockey hall of fame. Which team will he be put in on? Who cares. Sure I’d love to see him go in as a Ranger and arguably he made more difference to New York hockey then in Edmonton, but no matter how you look at it, he was outstanding on both teams. Whether he had Jason Blake in a choke hold or was scoring the third goal in game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, he will almost always be remembered for holding the cup over his head in a Rangers uniform.
Mark Messier is the definition of a great hockey Captain. Which is why is number is not only retired by New York but also by Edmonton.
